artist statement
Didi Suydam believes wearing jewelry should be a sensual experience, physically and visually. She feels it is important for the piece to respond to the body, either through movement or by how it interplays with the wearer. Her shapes are influenced by ancient cultures and architecture as well as the natural world. Her forms have an archetypal presence, often suggesting tribal masks, shields, and vessels, as well as reflecting the ancient tradition of body ornament, and armour. Suydam fabricates her one of a kind pieces in sterling and 18kt gold, and casts multiples to create elegant, sophisticated collections of earrings , bracelets and necklaces often accented with freshwater pearls or semi-precious stones.
