artist statement
I bring a graphic eye to a tactile medium. Appreciating the intrinsic earthy, organic quality of clay
as a material, I treat the surface with texture that invites touch, and the edges with a spontaneity that
suggests motion and vitality. Of equal interest to me is the exploration of the use of visual effects which
belie the nature of the material and serve to create an atmosphere of mystery. Thus, a simple ceramic form
takes on a living presence.
It is my desire to present objects familiar enough to evoke personal associations, yet subtle enough to
raise questions in the mind of the viewer. Both draw the viewer in, to verify initial impressions through
touch and visual investigation. Is it light, is it heavy, is it soft or firm, translucent or opaque, is light
being received or emanated, is shadow actual or illusory? It is during the space of interaction that the
sense of surprise, discovery and expansion we look to creative work for can be experienced.
My work can be found in galleries, museum shops and private collections in the United States and abroad.
