In my River Rock Series, the pieces have been created to be worn as an
amulet or a talisman. Legend says that if you find a rock with a cavity
or hole in it, you will have good luck; it is a good omen, a gift from the
earth. I help nature with the good omen by carving cavities and small
holes in the rocks with small hand held tools.
The metals I use are sterling silver and 18K white or yellow gold. The
metals are hammered or forged, which is a technique used by the Egyptians
5,000 years ago. It is a forming process that uses metal rods or wires
that is hammered on an anvil into a linear form. The pieces are then
soldered and finally stones or granules are applied.
Each piece in this series is unique, with its own special
characteristics. Each rock is selected because of its unique size and
shape. The rocks in this series project serenity and mystery associated
with powers of an amulet.
In my Rough and Refined Series I use diamonds in combination with granite
to create a dichotomy of something precious that sparkles and something
non-precious with a matt finish. This combination creates something that
is sophisticated and casual, which can be worn to an evening at the opera,
or an afternoon of shopping with friends.
I use strands of black or raw diamonds. The granite is hand carved into
beads or used as an inlay. The granite has colored diamonds set into it
for an accent. I use sterling silver which has been oxidized to play with
the color of the diamonds. Sometimes an 18k gold element is added for
contrasting color and added elegance. Enjoy the sophistication, enjoy the
casualness of this series.
